Facetime with non-apple headphones, volume too loud

Hi,

Iphone 5S and Ipad Mini 2

Latest OS as of writing, not sure exactly version number, but recently updated.

Problem:

When using facetime with non-apple headphones the volume is far too loud.

I have sent the volume in all settings options I can find on the devices to the lowest possible setting. Yet the volume is still loud enough to hear clearly everything the other person is saying at a normal volume speaking voice without the headphone actually near my ear. (If I placed headphone on the table, it would be the same volume as the lowest volume if phone was on the table on speaker.)

However, this doesnt happen when I use the apple headphones. Unfortunately I can't use the apple headphones, because the mic seems to be broken and the other person cannot hear anything when I use the apple headphones.

Headphones I have been using, don't have mic parts and are only for listening. However, they allow me to use the inbuilt mic. I cannot seem to find an option to make the device do this with the apple headphones plugged in.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

iPad mini 2 Wi-Fi, iOS 9.3.2
